Why should you consider being a part of a mentorship? Well, why wouldn’t you? If the opportunity to:
a) give a fellow human being guidance and insight into whatever it is you do
b) receive guidance and insight into whatever it is you do from a fellow human being
fell in your lap, would you take advantage of it?
I myself have mentors and mentees, and it’s been a meaningful and fulfilling experience on both ends. There isn't a whole lot that's better than being able to share an “aha!” moment with someone.
According to a study called "Does Mentoring Matter? A Multidisciplinary Meta-Analysis Comparing Mentored and Non-Mentored Individuals" (by Lillian T. Eby, Tammy D. Allen, Sarah C. Evans, Thomas Ng, and David DuBois), mentoring positively affects work and career attitude, performance, and even career outcomes. These effects are benefits of both mentee and mentor!
From my mentoring experiences, I've learned so much about myself. I discovered what areas of design I'd like to work in and even that I'd like to teach at the university level some day.
It's pretty easy to get set up with mentoring, so what are you waiting for?
